What Is Smudging?

     Since ancient times, our ancestors have burned herbs and resins.  They knew that the sacred smoke would raise vibrations, ward off negative energy, and help with their spiritual work. Today, we see this process as smudging, and it remains the most important step in many spiritual rituals. Smudging is a practiced exercise found in Feng Shui, numerous Native American tribes, many pagan traditions, as well as in some healing practices. It includes burning chosen herbs in a way that fills the space with the aroma of its smoke and is thought to remove negative energy.

     Smudging connects us with the Divine Creator and allows us to connect to a network of ways to increase spiritual security and blessings and improve our wellbeing. The smoke produced by burning sacred and spiritual herbs is thought to filter the body and soul, and bring clearness to the psyche.

How To Smudge

  • Light the end of a sage bundle with a match. Blow out quickly if it catches on fire.
  • The tips of the leaves should smolder slowly, releasing thick smoke. Direct this smoke around your body and space with one hand while holding the bundle in the other.
  • Allow the incense to linger on the areas of your body or surroundings you’d like to focus on. Using a fan or feather can also help direct the smoke, though this is optional.
  • Allow the ash to collect in a ceramic bowl or shell.
