Mandrake

Some species of Mandrake are so poisonous that it would kill those who harvested it within days.  It was believed pulling up the root of the plant would cause it to let out a scream killing any human that heard it within days.  People even turned to harnessing dogs and horses to pull the roots from the ground.  Luckily they really don’t scream, and can be handled safely when precautions are taken.  It is recommended to wear gloves while handling the fresh root and treat it with utmost respect.  The Mandrake is a powerful magical plant.

The dried roots of all forms of Mandrake are readily available for purchase these days, and are used in house protection, fertility, and prosperity spells and rituals. It can also be used to increase magical potency.  The root is “activated” by placing it in a prominent location in the home for three days, then setting it to soak in warm water overnight. Thereafter, the root is ready to be used for whatever purpose a witch has in mind.  This is American Mandrake – Mayapple, not Mandragora.
